I teach voice fundamentals. In singing that means good breath flow, easy production of tone, and optimal resonance for a rich and vibrant personal sound. Breath, and tone- firmness, and resonance are in constantly changing states, never static or rigid, and always in balance. The fundamental elements, properly balanced, give you the freedom to be expressive. They can be used in any style of singing.

I like to teach balanced singing. This means learning how to listen to your body as well as talk to, it. You learn to notice and balance breath tone and resonance in just the right amounts so the sound and the music and the words flow easily and express the emotions you want them to.

Flow is the Nirvana State of athletes and musicians. No struggle, no trying, no fight-or-flight, just high energy and calm mind. It's so great to get into The Happy Zone when you sing.

On the other hand we are all tempted to force our voices to be louder, higher or more mature than they are .This, results in imbalances, which I call entanglements. We can get into a groove of entanglements, which takes you out of the Happy Zone, heading for the DL. How can we find and stay in or near the Happy Zone? By noticing, and always seeking balance and flow.

This, of course, is the tricky part.

Balance can mean the mind-body relationship. Are you listening to your body? Is it listening to you?!Balance can mean the dynamic relationship between the air pressure and the relative firmness of our vocal chords, which combine to make flowing sound. Balance can also mean the relationship between Woofer and Tweeter, your low and high resonances. Our whole body resonates when we sing, but the most audible resonances live in the throat, mouth, and sometimes the nose. Resonance serves as both a filter and an amplifier, and is the most fun to play with.

Vocal resonance is complicated. There are lots of current theories To learn more, you can read "Fun with your Formants" or scientific studies on the acoustics of voice.

If we can balance the fundamental physical moves of voice production, and both listen and talk to our bodies, in a calm way, voila! We can sing any way we choose. And our choices are infinite.
